Seeing as I was busting to catch a decent Cod I decided this weekend to try the Needles on a Spring tide. Rather than launching at the usual Keyhaven I opted to launch at Tanners Lane so I didn't have to come off the tide too much.A longer trip at over 20 miles total but I hate that bit between Keyhaven and Hurst. When I arrived at Tanners it was flat calm,I was starting to get the feeling it could be a good day You can just make out the Needles in the pic after the Ferry and Hurst Castle. I rigged up for launch and was on the water about 11. I launched, got about 100yards and decided it may be a good idea to take the sail ;D So back to shore, sail rigged and away. Freshwater lifeboat were out around the Fort Albert area Got a few waves from the charter guys on Silver Spray, wonder how they got on. It took a couple of hours to get there and I decided to fish West of the Spoil grounds where I'd had success in previous years, most of the boats were on the spoils. Ended up in 80 odd ft and let out 100m of anchor line and held no problems.Tide was still pumping through. After about an hour caught a nice size Whiting Then it went quiet for a while until the tide started to back off then I was getting bites again. And better ones Then it happened, decent fish on and it wasn't a b'strd Conger ;D,I think the nearest charter probably heard me when I got it in the yak ;D Cuttle and lug on an 8/0 Pennel was the weapon of choice The sun was starting to drop now and it was time to head back with the flood I was glad to get my Needles Cod as with these guys there they probably won't be around for long... A great day on the water and great to learn that it was fishable on a Spring from the yak,it opens up so many more possibilities and more chance of being in the right place at the right tide.

Excellent Richi. You're right about them not being around for much longer as on Saturday there were 3 trawlers plough around .

Good report Richi.... and good to see that you are still pushing the boundaries and getting the results to match; nice one mate
I don't get why you didn't go from Keyhaven though ? I would have thought the water around the shelter of Hurst wouyld be good going ? Or were you able to get more advantage from the tide race off Tanners.

If I had launched at Keyhaven I would have had the S.Westerly almost in my face and no tide to help me on the return part at Hurst,As it was I was flying along from Hurst to Tanners at around 6mph with the help of the flooding tide. It's not easy on a kayak, you really have to plan around the winds and tides, especially if you're a lazy B*gger like me who likes to use the sail.I sailed half of the trip ;D

Yes mate If you were the guy in the boat that asked if I was okay, thanks for your concern Hello mate yes it was, great report and good to see you got a cod!! Not looking to start an argument or anything but when ive been motoring bk at night ive come aross kayakers and only noticed you at a closer distance than you look as your lights somtimes are not that bright?? i come across the other night as i couldnt get you on radar and your light wasnt that bright?? and just thought id check as you were in the shipping lane and well, you never know? But like i said not looking for a row i know by your reports youve got your safety gear etc... covered but would expect you'd appreciate my point of other boats being able to see you and other kayakers at night!!!! even if you were to put a radar reflector on as if the fog come down lights are useless until the last minute??? Anyway hopefully i havent offended you and this bloody weather will pick up soon and were all be able to get amongst them coddys!!! cheer's Milo.
