Yeah, I know, yet another report from this overfished locality. Still chasing a double Cod from the Yak though .
Wal (Andrew) PMed, a new Ultra to test, Saturday weather window looked good, so we agreed to try Blue Anchor. Andrew's last trip to BA resulted in 30 minutes on the water, followed by the infamous CambourneCaperPilot sinking and RNLI shout. The pressure was on to deliver a decent day, surely we could do better?
With that in mind, it began to unravel almost immediately. I'd forgot about the HW launch at BA, ...you don't. Memories of CCP's launch from the flooded slip, on his ill fated trip. Should have gone to Watchet.
We held back from launching, nervously eyeing the 2-3ft swell surging back from the wall and up the slip. To compound the pressure, we also had met John, one of V8Rob's acquaintances, on a first paddle (no fishing), who was lined-up on the slip waiting for us to go. After 30 minutes the sea appeared more settled or we'd just got used it, so Andrew set-off with a push from me. John gave me a hand away, then I stood by until John cleared the slip on his own. (get the newbies to do the work ;D). In my defence guv, we did have of loads of gear.
John disappeared in new Dorado off to Watchet, while Andrew and myself anchored over 'Daves' mark on the reef. Well, Andrew anchored, but mine dragged in the soft mud, usually it bites eventually, not this time. Back again, and this time drifted across the rear of Andrew, before biting a friendly 30 yards downtide, I jokingly remarked, “Probably snagged yours”.
Shout from Andrew, “Fish On”. Meanwhile, looked like my anchor was on the move. “Decent fish”, too concerned with sorting lines to buoy off and go over. Then, “Got your Anchor”, followed by a few expletives! First catch from the Ultra, 14ft of Orange Plastic and 6ft of red faced.....oh dear, not doing very well today.
From then on, things got better, anchored, third time lucky. John paddled through on his return from Watchet, shortly followed by Andrew bagging a nice Cod, 7-12, Yak PB, which made both our days.
The ebb eased, quick shore break on the reef about an hour before LW, time for pics and a play with Andrew's Endorfin wing paddle.
LW ish we headed back towards the launch for the planned flood phase. A long way across the beach back to the slip if going in (memories of my last trip, Dunster crash & burn returning), then offshore until we found 15ft of water, about a mile off the Cafe. Anchored, bites forthcoming from the off, first of many-up was a Bootlace Strap. Tide noticeably weaker on the flood. Andrew found another Yak PB in the shape of a 9-8 Thornback.
Managed a couple of 4-5lb myself.
Andrew again with Yak PB, Whiting. The Ray's and Conger were consuming a few hooks, lost what was probably a decent Eel while having a cuppa, before heading in around 18:00. Short drag across the beach, timing about right.
So turned out good after a shaky start, LW and the flood kept us busy and hopefully laid Andrew's ghost regarding Blue Anchor, certainly laid mine from Dunster. Very pleased to meet Andrew, enjoyed the day and no doubt back again soon!
Cheers
