Following the somewhat unexpected response from Killing Dogs, I thought it was about time we had a code of conduct to pass on to new anglers and hopefully follow.
I had a look on Google and what I found on there was , well wet.
So here is my 10 commandments for fishing.
1. Leave nothing on the beach except footprints.
2. When collecting live bait try to leave the site as you found it, ie put rocks back fill in holes etc.
3. After fishing return any unwanted live bait back ,where they may survive, not in the trash can.
4. Don't kill any fish you don't want to keep
5. If a fish is 'gut hooked' (sloppy fishing) kill the fish don't cut the hook off and chuck it back to die a slow death.
6. If you keep a fish, kill it quickly don't leave the poor bastard to flap about till it dies.
7. Treat fish with respect, put them gently back in the water if you don't want them, don't hurl them in the air. Do not leave them hanging from the hook when the rod is on a rod rest while you look for a torch etc.
8. Take heed of basic safety, like looking around before you cast.
9. Remember that your actions will be reflected on all other anglers
10. And this one is for your ideas
So please join in on this one, I know there is a code, mine is better, or is it?
Slag me off or agree with it
Perhaps we could make something from this idea but your input would be nice.

Having thought about it no10 should be....
Respect all older anglers and offer to buy them a pint or two. They may tell you something useful in return. But I doubt it!

Amendment to #3... or give to another angler to benefit from! 10. Take your own rubbish n put it in a bin or take it home!

Good start, perhaps no 10 could be ....
.If you see rubbish on the beach pick it up and bin it, even if it isn't yours.
Every little helps, and I don't want to fish on a beach covered in crap. Besides it would give anglers a good rep.

Great post - how about, if you wish to fish next to someone (especially when you are the only angler around) ask if it is ok. Point 5 - when a fish is gut hooked I always cut the line as close to the hook as possible in the belief that the combination of stomach juices and the sea in most cases will remove the hook

Good reply!
I would really like to find out a bit more about gut hooked fish. Hopefully by someone who knows more than I do. (That don't say a lot).
I have found fish on the beach that seemed to have starved to death , and others where the hooks have rusted and caused infection that has killed the fish.
But I have caught big Congers that have more than one trace hanging out of their mouths and the hooks have grown in the stomach
Perhaps it is down to the size of the fish
So that one can go on hold
Keep them coming,

"Respect the environment" might be a good catch-all.
I'll also add, Think about returning some keepers (especially specimens) if you have a good day.
On gut-hooked fish, there are anecdotes about fish surviving, but I don't know of any harder evidence. I suspect that the majority do not survive.

Not very big because.....
Normal hooks (especially ones that are slightly rusty) seem to react with fish; allowing infection to eat away at the mouth, Congers seem more resistant.
At least that is what it seems to me when I have been unlucky enough to find a dead/ dying fish on the beach, with its mouth rotted out (it gets a black slime inside) and a hole where the hook has rubbed away at the flesh but the fish couldn,t get rid of the hook because the barb was in too deep, so it couldn't feed .
I wondered how long the poor bastard had survived before it gave up.
Presumably not long enough for the hook to get bigger
I hope that answers your question?

Nice one TOF, I am very pleased that so many people have put some input into this subject. I always take my rubbish home with me or stick in a nearby rubbish bin. I have seen the amout of rubbish that is chucked in of Sandown Pier while diving, and on one day I counted about a dozen dead fish, Mackerel, Gar Fish and a small Ray,As for killing fish, the only fish I keep are ones that I know if a friend wants it. There was a report of a Diver who ripped a lobsters claws of, reported to the RSPCA who took him to court, not sure what happened but he was also repremanded and banned from the dive organisation he was qualified with. So just because it was a doggy, BE WARNED everyone, you never know who could be watching you!!!!!

Many years ago I talked my conscience into becoming my accomplice .
It is a good partnership and allows me to sleep well.
Over the years I have killed thousands of fish. In the 60's and 70's we used to go out and catch 15-20-25 plus stone of Mackerel a day , to sell to the potters for bait.
Boats full of dead and dying fish, blood guts , broken bits of jaw where we ripped the hooks out.
Yes I have done my share of killing ,but as we (hopefully) progress, let's try and only kill what we have to and kill things quickly.
That is why I started this debate.
My generation raped the seas, I hope your one does not kill them off.
