Talking to a couple of young lads who were dinghy fishing towards dusk off Players last night when a commercial came in out of the gloom and started off loading his Gill Nets just 30 yards from where they were fishing and headed towards Ryde offloading his wares -

A Weymouth boat was off Freshwater Bay last week
I never saw them shooting nets (I saw the boat) but I was told they shot from Watcombe to Datum Post, then did Compton then Brook
Can't say it is 100%, but I have no reason to believe the people who told me were lying
That is what ended the Bass in the 70's
2 miles of Gill net
Goggle gill nets for sale !! All from China and they are saying how many TONS of gill net they import
One thing I know about Gill nets is they ain't heavy.
You work it out!!

If it is a white Cyclone called Swordfish it carries a Weymouth registration but actually works from Portsmouth. They dont do a lot of gill netting they are into their pots. A lot of local boats are registered elsewhere if you get really bored look at some of the registration letters and work out where they might be registered. There are some locally from Scotland!!
