We have been into this at Freshwater and we are certain that the IOW Council DO NOT OWN THE LAND.
I suggest that you do some research on who owns what, The IOW Council are very good at claiming they own land that they do not in fact own.
Ask for proof of ownership of the land
You need to contact Tricia.Stillman@IOW .gov.uk
Read very carefully what she replies and keep all correspondences in writing
If you have an archive society in your area get in touch with them , they can be very helpfull
Don't just lay down and take it

No council can be trusted to behave sensibly or properly I'm afraid and I know because I used to work for one. Their number one issue is how can they get more money; mostly because they waste so much of it on daft schemes in which most of us taxpayers are not interested, in case you haven't noticed. If you want a classic example just look over the water at Pompey's Millennium Tower - the money would have been far better spent on old folk and school and road improvements. Moreover the poncey exterior elevator which cost a bomb and has never worked has now gone. So folks never, ever let the council get away with anything without creating a big stink.

apparently for £3.50 you can do a search via the land registry to find out who owns what.

Sorry Nipper but you are so wrong about the Pompey Tower , etc
Such projects need much research from civil servants, who then need to set up committees, sub committees and feasibility studies.
This can take up to four years and keep them in well paid jobs for that time.
After that they will need to go on fact finding tours to Australia, Singapore, Barbados (always in January /February) to access how other projects have been done there.
After the findings are published , with luck. a public inquiry will be held.
This will employ more civil servants to produce reports that no one will read.
Finally the project that no local person wants will go ahead.
People from Poland , Eastern Europe will be brought in to do the job, like the Olympics, and afterwards they will sign on and send their money home while they work on the side.
When the project is finished the local Council will get the TV , Press etc to open it in the grand style and everyone will say how wonderfull it is .
Like the Olympics
Then after one year the novelty has worn off so the council will form a Central comity and sub committees to see what can be done with the
useless pile of crap that they spent millions on in the first place.
Naturally this will mean feasibility studies and research trips abroad, (January and February again)
Finally everyone will agree it was a mistake , but as it was done by a previous Local Government it is not their fault
This has kept civil servants in well paid jobs for years .
Money well spent
If Local Government, government , start spending money on things people need , what would the civil servants do?
I am sorry to be rude , but you seem to think that it is more important for people to have a hospital to go to when they are ill than keep an overpaid ,useless, parasitic civil servant in a job for life , so that they can carry on wasting public money on ridiculous projects
Shame on you!!
