Thicks grow bigger and fight better Thins are okay I guess and some guys who specialise in them do get some bigguns...in the 6Lb class. Thicks are the more wiey of the two species and are what most mullet anglers set out to catch. Both can be caught on fly fishing kit. Thins will take a baited spoon, retreived slowly and on occasion - but rarely - take bread. Thicks are pretty much bread only. They will drive you mad....but oonce mastered thay are awesome, so go for it

Easiest way to tell Golden Greys...goldies....is by the slime they are covered in; gets all over your hands, net and line.....and of course the big golden spot on the gills Thin Lips have a long thing pectoral fin and no little bumps on the lips; which are very evident on the Thicks

Cam I would be surprised if it were Thicks, as they are already offshore, ready to breed.
The Thins stay local as they breed in the early summer inshore. But if they were grouped I'd be surprised if they were bass; but it depends on how many there were and I'm sure that there are occasions when bass group ?
Could they be a freshwater species as it is xchurch ?
There are records of large nets of thin lipped grey mullet in Southampton Water in January and February going back over 150 years.....so my money is on them

Thins will take bread Cam..... I've had loads myself and I know a stack of guys who fish xchurch for the Thicks in the summer and they always get the odd Thin amongst them. It sounds like the Thins are still well up the river then. I would love to have a go at them. But I can't complain, the mullet here are fat and lively...... I just need the time to travel to the best venues Thanks for the news from home mate....much appreciated
