Hi all, this may seem a daft question, but do I need an earth cable on my boat (from the keel band or ?) If so, do I take it to the battery It's been a long time since I've fitted out a boat and can't find a thread that helps. Just don't want to finish the floor and then someone says "you need" if you know what I mean (trying to get it right first time). Thank's for any help and advice. Dave

i cant think of any reason why you would need it but using the keel may not work anyway. stainless is not magnetic and im not sure that it would conduct electric .easy to check though
running a fairly heavy lead from the battery along the boat could be a good idea to allow you to hang ancillary wiring on it instead of running them all back individually might be a good idea.

Dave No Dave, I would just get a Buzz bar fitted, run the bty to that, then run all your earths from there to the equip, nice and neat then and only need small wires, you can also to this with a Live buzz bar with a mounted fuse holder

just for clarity stainless steel does conduct, and just for the record magnetism dosnt realy have anything to do with conductivity, for example carbon fibre will conduct, as will some plastics (ESD plastic bags are made to conduct in a controlled manner) hope this is useful

12v system is earthed (return black coloured lead)to the battery, same as your car system. Like Bully says you wire the battery with heavy leads to buzz bars, one for your red leads and one for the return black leads. The buzz bars come in a variety of sizes to allow you to hang as many system off them as you need. This is one I fitted to my Raider 18. If you go to page 7 of this section I start with a series of articles covering this and a number of other issues I found with doing a refit...all good fun. Hope that helps

I should have added that the type shown in the photo is a dual lead variety with fusses. You connect the negative (black) leads at the top and the red equipment thin leads connect to one of the 12 fussed connectors.
Yoy can acheive the same with a buzz bar for each set, which i did fit as well; due the number of electronics fitted.
The picture looks all neat and tidy, but not so much once it had been filled :0) This type comes with a cover that makes it look a little bit more professional and then you finish off with spiral cable bundle
