I've just had a very interesting chat with a good mate of mine from down Dorset way whose favourite method of catching Bass this time of year is live-baiting with Pout - Ive been attempting the same technique myself on the Island but we have both been struggling to get a few live-bait in the bucket this Year - his theory is that where the Mackerel have been so short on the ground this year that the Bass are already mullering the Pout and have been for the past Month or so ..... well its food for thought - Im going to be trying again in the Week coming but will be taking a few Mackerel Baits with me just in case

Trouble is ,it's not just the Mackerel but all their fry that were at the bottom of the food chain. With the Mackerel now gone millions of tons of food have vanished as well.
More like the house of cards than a stool.

Its always the same, take away the food supply or the predators that are needed to balance the whole equation. Cod never recovered on the Grand Banks ..why ? I reckon it is because the big Cod ate the mid-sized predators, like pout (keeping their numbers down). If you remove the big Cod then pout numbers explode and they eat....yes you guessed it, baby Cod. The babay cod get mullered and so no big cod....collapse continues.
Who eats all the pout, what do they eat and so on. Apparently bass numbers are now down to their lowest level in 20 years...according to the latest research. This will impact on the relationship with pout....which are a mid-range predator. The removal of countless millions of tons of mackerel by Icelandic commercials will undoubtedly have impacted the bass. perhaps the shortage of mackerel has meant the bass are turning to eating more pout than normal - as you suggest TOF.
Next it will be interesting to see what happens with the reduction of pout !!!!
One thing is for sure,,,Huge Fernley Whitting-fool and the other celebrity chefs won't accept any blame, as they recommend the continued decimation of our rarer & slower growing fish species....because it makes for novel tv programmes .....grrrrrr
