I just took "Monty" for a long walk along Compton Beach. Bloody wonderfull no weed and clean as a whistle.
Still as we were walking along I remember something that happened back in the early 70s.
We used to have a few pots out and pen up the Lobsters we caught until we had a fair few then cook them up and invite a few friends round for a Lobster feast!
Still one day we caught this strange fish in the pot. Not knowing what it was we put the bugger in a bucket of water, then we we got back we put it in the penner.
Then we looked it up in a book. It was a trigger fish, a rare find. So we rang Poole aquarium and they said they wanted it and would pick the bugger up next day, and would give us two free tickets for the aquarium!!
Next day we meets the chap at Yarmouth, he's got the van with the tank and all the gear.
So off we go and pull the penner.
It was then that we realised why the basxxxxd thing was in the pot. They eat Lobsters. The bloody thing had killed the lot!
Still at least it wouldn't starve to death on the way to its new home, and we got our two tickets that we promptly lost.
But now the point of this waffle. Back then a Trigger Fish was as rare as Rocking Horse Shxt ,but now I am told they are quite common around here.
I just looked up sea temperature changes and it has only gone up .7 a degree in 40 years, so it ain't warmer water that is bringing them here.
The other thing is that if warmer water fish are moving into our waters is it because their natural Eco system has been destroyed and they are seeking food in our waters, and if this trend continues what effect will it have on our fish?
There again,,,back in the old days the Tuna were regulars round here, so it could be just a natural progression of species migrating to different feeding zones.
Question is on this thread, has anyone else out there caught a fish that isn't normally in our waters?
Strangely enough ,that was the same year we caught an Electric Ray. Happy times.
