I have just heard that people around Wooston ,in Southampton have been kept awake at night because of the mating call of the Male ,Midshipman Fish.
(Google it)
Personally I have never heard of the Midshipman fish, or the low moaning call he makes when he is desperate to mate. (Although I know how he feels)
So has anyone really heard this, or caught one?
And does the moaning noise really work??
Or is the noise just disgruntled anglers moaning to each other about their lack of catch ??

Having spent a misspent youth fishing both day and night on the banks of the River Itchen and Weston shore I can say hand on heart I’ve never heard of anything as bizarre. What’s more in all that time I caught a good many fish but never one of these ‘Midshipman Fish.’
May be they are an invasive species either that or a new Spike Island myth and legend story.
Any way I have just touched base with a pal fishing on Weston shore as I type and there is no sight or sound from any of these Midshipman Fish.

I heard about these droning noises a few weeks ago. It was on the news and the council was investigating. Very surprised that they are blaming a Californian fish! I logged in because I thought there may be a thread on the subject. Sounds like an interesting fish, it uses bioluminescence to attract it's prey like an Anglerfish. There are articles that say it keeps houseboat owners awake at night in California. Never heard of it before so probably not on the British Species list but we know that different species are moving into our waters all the time for many reasons including change in water temperature. Any catch would probably be a british record! See you down there!

Apparently "Woolston" and Emsworth are the kippers knickers of mating grounds for these moaning, droaning piscatorial heroes. I say heroes because according to a mate of mine who is a marine biologist Identified one of these fish on Hope beach Shanklin some years ago. Most "including myself" thought it was a massive weaver and yes they can sting as well so watch out, but in the medical sector they are using parts of the vocal chords from these midshipman fish to help with stroke victims who have lost the capability of speech! Weird stuff eh?

Outstanding answer!!!!!
But apparently Fred Dinage ,said it was true on Southern News, so it must be right.

Know the feeling.
But I have always worried when they arnt moaning, normally it means they have...
1 seen something they like in a shop but it expensive
2. Bought something expensive
3. Invited there mother down to stay
4. Time to go fishing regardless of weather, tides or lack of bait
Personally, over the many years that I have been involved with women I think that the only time they are truly happy is when they have something to moan about.
And remember, if they arnt moaning about something then they start thinking about what they can moan about.
Like , new car, holiday, extension etc. And that gets expensive .
Best to keep them happy by letting them moan about the little things in life, like smelly bait and fishing gear left lying around.
We ignore what they say, they have their say that we ignore and everyone is happy.
