I was forced to go shopping today. Well either that or starve.
So I went to Aldi, Iceland, Morrisons and Sainsburys.
What I noticed in the first two was that the fish (frozen) was all in boxes and packets.
Only the last two shops had fish counters.
So it made me think, when a product is boxed and packaged just how much does it stop the consumer thinking about where it came from?
You see the meat section, all in plastic and people have long ago stopped thinking that the five slices of cured Ham were , in fact once a Pig.
I know for a fact that if you showed 99 percent of people a live Porker, and told them that if they wanted the slices of Ham you would have to kill it in front of them , they would say no.
I also believe that if people really knew about the fishing industry as it stands at the moment, with all the dead fish being thrown back, the overfishing, the nonsence with the quotas etc, then they may, just may 'vote with their feet' as it were.
And before people say 'Wont happen' it worked for Battery Hens and battery animals.
Why?
Because of publicity, from the press and Television.
Soooo, perhaps we as concerned Anglers should preasure the TV company's to run a program about what is going on in the fishing industry.
Not to glorify it like some do, but to show the flaws in it as it stands, and what is going to happen very soon if everyone keeps buying their fish in little boxes.

Pretty sure one of the celebrity chefs did a few pieces on this, it was on the news a few times too. Just thinking fish aren't as cute/fluffy as chooks so won't be as popular

Regrettably I am one of those people who watches very little television.
I think when the day comes I have to resort to watching Come Dancing , or Coronation Street, it will be time to take the long walk into the sea.
But, if a few chefs are raising awareness then good for them!
I did however watch the Deadliest Catch regularly, but did wonder if the crab market in the States would have been so big had they showed how the Crabs are processed.
I may be wrong but I believe they are torn to bits live.
Having said that at least they have the quota system sorted and will undoubtably be fishing for crab for years to come.
There again they aren't in Europe

Just thinking fish aren't as cute/fluffy as chooks so won't be as popular Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall was that man and it was his personal 'Fish Fight'. However his figures and thinking were flawed and he alienated Anglers and Scientists alike. Whether he did harm, good or had no impact at all only time will tell. At least he was willing to put his head over the parapet although some might say that was for his own financial gain.

If nothing else Hugh Farnly Farnly did bring the bi-catch atrocity to the notice of the EU Fishery Commission (useless as they are) and they have made some changes, but what good that will do I don't know.
