Ah,Autumn, the time of bonfires, perpetual darkness and Xmas adverts.
Also the time to go Cod fishing.
So..we go to the tackle shop, get some gear and some bait, down to the boat and set off.
The sea is flat calm, the sun is out and it is unseasonably warm.
Spend steaming time having a couple of beers, and catching a bit of a late tan.
Arrive at designated fishing spot, bait up gear and start fishing.
As soon as the bait hits the bottom the bites begin, and the fish come in thick and fast.
By the end of the day, you get home with two boxes of Cod, and the old lady has to clear out the freezer to get it all in.
In the real world....Go to tackle shop, spend £35 on frozen bait, hooks, swivels and the new lures that 'everyone is using this year and are catching loads of Cod.'
Go down to boat, fill up tanks with £75 of fuel.
Head out to sea ,on a dark sleet filled day with the waves picking up and the spray breaking over the bows soaking everything.
Finally reach destination and bait like your fingers ,is still frozen solid.
Manage to free a piece, and start fishing.
By now the sea is so rough you have to wedge yourself against the gunwale to keep safe.
No chance of feeling a bite so pull line in every 15 minutes .
After two hours, your feet are so cold, you pour your thermos of coffee into your welly boots, to de-frost then.
Finally hit lucky and catch 5lb Cod
Happy days and five frozen hours later, return home with one fish and advanced hyperthermia .
Tie boat up and realise tanks are empty.
Take fish home 'chuffed' ,take photos, finally fillet fish and put two fillets weighing 1lb10oz in fridge.
Following day eat fish then realise they cost £50 a fillet, but ignore this fact ,the cold, the wet and the discomfort, and get ready for the next trip.
We must be mad
