Now that digging bait carries the Death Sentence, frozen bait cost the same as a night on the lash in a nice warm pub ,fresh bait is now a gourmet luxury that is found on the fish counter of most supermarkets, and the average new fangled 'guaranteed to catch any fish' lure, is a tenner a throw... I was remembering some of the baits we used when I was a Nipper.
Garden snails and Earth worms used to work well, the worms in the river for Flatties, snails for the sea.
Any fresh squashed road kill ( used to be Mixi Rabbits) or Phesant, cut up worked well for Bass and Congers.
Bits of Chicken, allways caught well, usually the head or guts as we ate the rest .
We used to go to the Market in Newport on Tuesday,on the Bus, so the old chap could get his 'Chiddlings' ,nice and fresh from the butchers. The old chap in there used to give us a bag of scraps, bits of skin, grissle, etc that we could use as bait.
Doubt any of you lot will remember it, but the market was where Morrison's is now.
Remember back in my day meat was a luxury
I wonder if we have all become brainwashed into buying the 'recognised' baits, squid, mackerel, rather than giving something else a try.
And before any smart Ass ,tells me that Bacon Rind is good for catching Crabs, then so was staying at the Imperial Hotel in Port Said.
That I bloody well do know!! T O F

I used to find that innumerable pints in the NAAFI bar, Warsteiners in the Altstadt followed by a lot of vodka red bulls in "Jams" night club could result in a good return on the crab front too.....

Ya, can't get proper food now thanks to this Nanny State we live in.
Everything has to be passed by Europe Rules before it goes into the shops, and the only country that takes any notice of the rules is us.
Every other country either ignores them or interpreters them differently ( ignores them)
Same as fishing quotas.
Cant get hearts now, kidneys are forbidden, you can't even get proper milk!!!
And don't even think about asking for chiddlings, most butchers wouldn't know what they were.
Everything is plastic wrapped, sterile and bloody tasteless crap!!
