When it comes to fishing, it really is down to old age and experience .
I watch Nippers standing on the beach fishing a ebb tide, in an Easterly wind ,and I know that they will have more chance of catching a dose of the clap at the local pub ,than they will of catching a fish.
But, to the select few, experienced Anglers, of the correct disposition , who can read the correct time and tide, and know exactly when and where to fish, they can expect very good results.
For, example today... So pay attention and you may learn something.
After the forecast, I knew the rollers would be pounding into the Bay.
I know this churns up the seabed so crabs etc are sucked up from the rocks and are food for big Bass.
From experience I know exactly what time of the tide is best to fish in these conditions.
I also know what type of bait to use, to catch the big Bass, and I am old and wise enough, unlike you lot to read the sky and see when the squalls are moving in.
Unlike you Nippers, I only take a few swivels , hooks and weights with a bit of bait , with me rod and line when I go fishing.
All this 'rig for that fish, and rig for this fish,' load of rubbish. Big hooks and big Bait for big fish, small hooks and wriggly worms , for small fish .
So I get to the Bay as the surf is running just right. perfect, just as the Sun comes out.
Admittedly , there was a bit of a crowd watching , what I was doing , and saying that I was daft to fish in such conditions, but what did they know!!!!
Allways remember, when fishing in very rough conditions,,, watch the Bloody waves coming in, that's why you shouldn't fish at night, in bad conditions, unless you know what you are doing.
First cast, nothing, Second cast.. nothing
Then on the third cast...
The biggest Fuxxxxg wave of the day hit the wall from nowhere, throwing up more water than goes over Niagara Falls in a week, and all lands on me, much to the delight of the watching crowd, who are either in their cars or at a safe distance back.
Soaked, bedraggled, and pissed off I pick up my sodden rod and reel in, then ,just when all hope is gone...
Bang.........
I get hung up, just to add to my embarrassment .
Cut the bloody line, walk home, find I am not allowed in the house until I 'Take all those soaking cloths off, because I have just cleaned and you are not walking through the house like that'.
Naked ,frozen and dejected, I make my way to the shower to thaw out.
Eventually, warm ,dry and with a large glass of something wicked, I realise that experience , good ideas and braving the elements may be fine.
But sitting by a fire, at this time of year, does have a lot to be said for it!!
