I have harped on about this before, but I thought it may be worth a thread on its own.
Treble hooks, I. Bloody hate them, although certain television 'anglers' seem to use them all the time. (Fine example to others)
My grief with the treble hook is the fact that if a fish breaks free it will undoubtably die a slow death, where as with a single hook they have a chance of chucking it, and I think that treble hooks are Basically cheating .
I have seen on River Monsters, Jeramy Wade use two or three treble hooks on a bait to catch fish ( presumably after consulting the local Shaman ) and then after hooking the fish, make such a fxxxxk up of landing it that he has lost the fish, then just moaned about his bad luck, ( not his lack of fishing skills) not giving a Tinkers Cuss about the poor bloody fish that has a treble hook jammed in its gullet because of his stupidity.
Still that's my rant today, so should they be banned or not?
Perhaps you think they are a good thing.?

Its always a risk - losing a fish & lure - but having just given a year over to lure fishing in the Persian Gulf I rarely lost a fish, with hooks-n-all. But it does happen and you are right. But if you don't use trebles with deadbaits and lures, for fast-attack predators, then you don't get many hook-ups.
I see your point TOF and having tried to use single hooks on my lures there I soon had to change back.
I would guess that the everage pike angler might say the same. Yes you can get away with it, but you won't catch as many fish
As to Mr Wade (afraid of his own socks) the number of fish he loses is criminal incompetence :0)
