Never caught a Bass (not many caught on Skye) so I have just booked for week in September in Kinsale , Ireland. 600 mile trip but I will also visit ex in laws I haven't seen for 35 years. Harbour one side of Cottage , beach the other side and James fort to the north. Boat hire from trident hotel .Anyone fished that area or any tips ?

Ireland banned commercial bass fishing in 1990 so seems to be reaping the benefit. Bass gillies for hire by the hour with no bass no charge. They claim to have never missed out. 90 euros to hire a small boat for 3 hours. 40 years since I hired one from the same place. Promised a boat and outboard but only got oars. 1 hour drifting out - 3 hours hard rowing coming back but a wonderful day.

Now back from fishing Kinsale but still no Bass. All I caught was 2 to 3" mackeral. The locals , asians , eastern europeans were out in force , catching the same but returning nothing (filling buckets). One old bloke was fishing with the bottom half of an old thick boat rod with an eye taped on the end. It did not flex at all. He said he had a good tussle with a large mackeral. The Asians were also filling buckets with white bait. The whole bay was full of white bait.

I think we are all a bit desperate to catch a decent bass this year. They seem to be few and far between; certainly I haven't caught one bigger than a pound all year for some unknown reason.
