A fantastically sunny day co-incided with a fishing pass Sunday so i figured it'd be rude not to drag the Yak out to Sandown bay
There could be worse ways and places to spend a Sunday afternoon!!
Well - the learning curve part 1 - make sure that if you're going to try and fish a deeper water mark that your anchor rope is long enough!! I tried anchoring in a couple of places that, from advice given and from the look of the water in the run of the tide indicated structure of some type i just couldn't hold or find the bottom!
After drifting around and failing to feather up a single mackerel I had to resort to fishing off of tried and tested low water marks that i go from on the beach. I still felt confident, a beautiful summers day that was hindered by the fact that every bait dropped over the side was instantly shredded by unhookable diddy bream or an enormous army of these critters!!
At one point i also had the RNLI boat steam past at a rapid rate of knots, i think the buggers wanted some live practice at helping people out of the water!!
The learning curve part 2 - there were some nice large waves rolling into shore so i had a go at surfing in, now i knew there was a sandbar in front of me but it looked like there was plenty of water covering it.... i built up a good turn of speed, caught a nice wave and came to a sudden, shuddering halt and nearly stacked it completely in front of a beach full of tourists!!
Glad to get out there again and, with a few technique tweaks hope to get amongst the bigger fish of the bay shortly
