Well apparently there's some sort of music festival or summat going on this weekend so my Yak mentor (Wavechief) was otherwise pre-occupied but, i had a pass so.....
Back to the bay it was! I REALLY wanted a ray of some variety to christen Tiddler with, not having a guide or any sat nav/fish finder type effort i tried a few marks that produce from the shore (but a bit further out) and another mark that i guesstimated the location of from a previous boat trip.
To begin with i drifted for about a half hour trying to feather up a few mackerel but, surprisingly to no avail.
The first two marks i tried just threw up a lot of crab/lobby action. On "anchor up" time on both occasions though the anchor got snagged, i ended up side on against the current at a 45 degree angle trying desperately to pull the bloody thing up! Both times the trip "tripped" and i got it back thankfully but it was a time for the smelly freckle to pucker up a bit!!
Last spot i tried was right down off of Culver and i landed right into Bream central. Unfortunately the smaller variety that you just cant hook yet still manage to wreck your baits!!
I did however, manage this wee chap
I figured i'd try one last spot but this time the anchor was well and truly stuck, once again squeaky bum time but i had to cut my losses and cut loose. The first trip out with the new anchor and chain set up turned out to be its last!!
Now, being idle i had let the tide and wind run me down to my marks. I now had to paddle back....
It was ridiculous, i just wasn't making any headway against the tide, i ended up paddling right into the shore, still paddling like mad but only just keeping pace with an OAP walking his dog on the beach!!
Thankfully/eventually i got back to the car park completely shattered, so much so i couldn't lift my kayak onto the car!! Ended up getting a passer by to give me a lift!!
One to the yakkers - was i just unlucky with the chain and and anchor? I was using a 2.5 kg anchor with 1.5 meter of chain with thick ish chord joining it all up. I used a lighter anchor and chain on previous trips with no trouble.....
