Oh dear what a sight , I fish for the table but that was terrible , looks like done for some sort of financial gain , I usually only take about 3 for eating over a year and as of yet I haven't been out fishing for them yet , don't know what to say a sad sight indeed .

The carcasses look like they were prepped for the meat as opposed to pot bait, i'm guessing netting too as the pups were left whole (too small to bother with) but that's still a massive amount of dead hounds, all dumped near the Folly inn so i'd also say from a local boat. Not good.

Read a report somewhere called 'scrapping the bottom of the barrel' WSF I think - makes for depressing reading indeed. It's a case of just fishing for what is left (both us and the commercials)

In our local competition we kept just two for eating. Came in early as we had caught enough. One boat brought in 10 pollock and at least a dozen mackerel. I later found the smaller fish and the mackerel dumped in a bin. Hadn't even the sense to feed them to the seagulls.

The recent marine survey by DEFRA estimated that anglers take between 25% and 50% of the catch made by commercial boats. When I hear of this sort of careless waste, the figures sound not only plausible but an indictment of a considerable proportion of sea anglers. Some anglers clearly operate their own discard policy.

I an sure that anglers return more fish alive than the commercial boats. The mackerel and small fish dumped were by a once a year angler. We caught 20 plus and only retained two.

Can we honestly say that we are surprised or shocked?
Nothing will change until the last fish has gone.
The writing has been on the wall for years, but no one wants to read it.
Just look at the Mackerel this year, or the absence of them.
You sow the wind and you reap the whirlwind, and it's starting to blow hard right now!!

Oh yes, anglers will return more than commercials, who can only return them dead anyway. Still, I was surprised at the figures, and belies the belief many anglers have that their retentions are trivial in comparison with commercial landings. We now know they are not, so catch and release becomes important.
I tend to agree with TOF. Things overall do look grim, even for those who believe in the self healing powers of Gaia.
