As some may know i've spent the last week with my family of ASBO's in Menorca, a place that stupidly okayed me for all inclusive (free beer!!!!) but that also had some absolutely amazing coastlines.
On one of my forays to walk off my evenings gluttony i saw a local fisherman, using some ungodly archaic set up with what looked like cotton wool feathers to tempt up whatever was there, he managed some seriously diddy Dorado (that he kept )but i got to thinking that you could have some serious fun in the Yak here
This led to me wanting my yak
To go fishing in my yak
To be away from everybody in my yak
Day after we landed i was out in Tiddler
It was quite lumpy to begin with but settled as the evening went on. I'd been there about an hour and was beginning to get one of "those" feelings, i'd been smashed up twice on the squid baited rod, missing both bites, once, through nattering to Uncle Snoops on the phone and the other when re-baiting the other rod. I'd also missed a classic ray bite and simply retrieved a well chewed up sandeel instead
But then, finally, my "Ray hole" as i've come to name it threw up my biggest and best spotty to date, easily 4lb in weight and it scrapped like a beast
I then had a phone call from one of my fellow yakkers saying that i was in their sights and that i should prepare for some company! On their charge out to where i was i landed my first ever thorny on tiddler. Interestingly on this same capture i found out that a thornbacks spines can go right through a dry suit!!
It would appear that my fellow yakkers, armed with GPS's, found me to not quite be on the designated mark, either that or the buggers were just being anti-social!!
It worked for them though, straight into fish, John having a massive undy that he guesstimated around the 17-18lb mark. They had a fair few ray, smutts and pout between them while i got dinner sorted
Communicating by text we agreed to up sticks about 2200. At 2145 my left handed rod did that tell tale tap, tap....tap, THUMP.........FISH ON!!!! This was heavy, fighting well and staying down, i prayed it was an undy, in between pumping the fish up i got my headlamp on to see better and this big line of silver came into the light, freaked, went completely bat sh#t, rolled around and bit through my trace.
I couldn't decide if i was more annoyed that it wasn't an undulate or that it had gotten away without me seeing the size of the bugger properly
Still, on the plus side i never had to try and unhook the flipping thing!!
There's an undy out there with my name on it somewhere!!!
