I've given up calling these trips "Undy hunts" in the vain hope that by doing so may enable me to actually get one on the Yak!!
Tonight the weatherman lied, plain and simple. What was meant to be a pleasant 4mph westerly was a much larger SSW making the mark off of Sandown dodgy to say the least. Have to admit i would've still tried it if i was on my own but the young head listened to the voices of experience from Tony and John and we buggered off to old faithful - the stinkpot mark off of Shanklin.
Once again this was lumpy and not massively pleasant but faint heart and all that...
Finally anchored up around 1945 and straight away we were into fish. I was using a mixture of Mackerel, squid, sandeel and pout but it was soon apparent the only thing anything was interested in was the mackerel. In the first hour i had four congers and five or six pout, all of a good size
Three of the eels were fairly small, around the 5-6lb mark but the last was by far the best. It started off giving a little rattle, i leant back in my seat and just watched the rod bend completely in half so the rod tip went under water!! It all seemed in slow motion!!
The eel was by no means a monster, i'd guess only between 10 and 15lb but by christ did it scrap!! The picture doesn't do it justice, nor is it that good quality but it was the best i could get in a lumpy sea, trying to scrap an eel one handed whilst trying to take a pic with the other hand!
The others just filled up on pout with John also finding a good bream, no raymonds at all unfortunately, we didn't stay out for long, conditions were a bit poo and a cold beer and a comfy missus was calling.....
I'm running out of time for that undulate, fingers crossed for next week!!
