Last year my main target was to get an Undulate on the yak, it proved to be my bogey fish for the season, all around me others caught them whilst i had pretty much every other species going. The 2 that i did manage to get to the yak spat the hooks and/or had the snood break at the last moment......frustrating!! Well, 2015 i hope to finally nail one so, today was my first attempt! It was a balmy plus 3 degrees not factoring in the wind chill! I anchored up in one of our usual/old faithful spots and awaited my first fish of the season..... Straight away my baits were getting hit by nuisance fish which i guessed to be diddy whiting but then something a little better picked up my squid Then, again, it happened, a classic ray bite, nudge, nudge, wham. I lifted into it and the bugger took line straight away and it was HEAVY. I must've scrapped with it a good 5-10 minutes and then she finally surfaced, an absolute monster of an undulate ray. I was praying that this one stayed with me. I reached over, made a grab for it but it wasn't quite done and dived away again. I brought it back to the surface and it rolled over showing that it was only lightly hooked on my top pennel hook.....which straightened then snapped I was a bit miffed. If anyone heard foul and abusive language echoing around Sandown bay i apologise!! To finish with i snaffled a doggy before the cold got the better of me and i paddled back in. I didn't blank but those bloody Undulates are still defying me!! Game on!!

Well done Ian, despite the early C&R ! I can feel the pain....but your day is now one trip closer; and you have the spot to do it.
I have to say that - for January - that is a great day. I can think of days when I couldn't buy a bite in January from the boat.
Looking forward to the next instalment
