I managed to wangle a day off work today having spotted a weather window earlier in the week I was joined by Lureman and Overrun who had also wangled a day off
Todays plan was catch a few fresh mackerel and use them as Tope bait
As we arrived at the mark the ebb was still belting through and having had more joy on the Tope on the flood before previously I decided to pass the time using up some frozen peeler
We'd all managed to catch some mackerel and with slack water approaching now was the time to change tactics and drop down a flapper for the Tope.
After a few more minutes I had a few more mackerel and put a live one on As the tide was just about on the swing and I was getting buffetted by some hefty waves I pulled the weight up just short of the sea bed so that I could swing round with the tide.
This also enabled me to feel that unmistakable panic a mackerel displays with a big predator bearing down on them and after the rod rattling all over the place the run began
I hadn't expected that almost on slack water
After the initial express train charge I got it up to the boat and then a few determined surges for freedom and she was aboard and I was grinning from ear to ear
Looks lovely and placid in the photo until she started throwing a hissy fit and trying to bite everything in sight deciding that my Kokatat drypants would make a good start
After that she made a lunge for the other leg and I got her back over the side asap the nutter.
There were a few predators taking chunks out of everything out there today
I hooked a second one bigger and lost it through tackle and lost a further one and snapped a rod like it was a twig
Anyway after various mayhem I had no more tope traces aboard so went back to fishing crab
Overrun is there somewhere?
Maybe you can see him in this one?
Did I say it was a bit lumpy at anchor ?
Here is Lureman anyway
Thanks for the company guys, shame the other guys couldn't make it
