I was due out on a charter trip today which, unfortunately, got cancelled late on meaning that i dipped out on a yakkers get together last night. Typically they had a blinding night and filled their boots so, a few hours after they quit i found myself paddling out there!
It takes a special type of loon to get up at 0300 to go fishing!
Watching the sunrise over Sandown/Shanklin bay is an absolute delight, i had the night and the moon to my right
Being chased away by the coming sun to my left
As soon as the light began to show the bay boiled with mini mackerel shoals, got my bait sorted toot suite and dropped down. I used squid on one rod hoping for a good smutt and fresh mackerel on the other hoping for eels and ray, first drop on the mackerel resulted in a stonking bite which bit through the snood about halfway up
The other rod kept being hit with odd looking bites, not quite bream like but more.....
Smutt pups!
A wee spotty showed around the same time
But then it got a bit too quiet so i moved a bit closer in resulting in a couple more smutt pups and two smallish thornies
Again it got Q word so again i moved closer in, this time though, slightly different results. My first drop down had a head and guts on one, whole fillet on the other. The head and guts rod started bouncing intermittently with a bit of interest when the newer toy slammed over
A very entertaining tussle resulted in...
A respectable undy weighing in about 11.5lb
Interestingly, when unhooking the ray i saw a well chewed up mackerel head in its chops and, after checking the now ominously still other rod discovered that all that was left bait wise was a mackerel cheek and lip! Gutty bugger had troffed both baits!
Well, my pass time was approaching along with the forecast stronger winds. Not as good a session as the boys had from the night before but 4 ray, 3 smutts and a butt load of mackerel wasn't too shabby an effort!
Plus i got to see a fabulous sunrise
Ciao for now
