Well, last nights rain saw most of the fair weather yak danglers bail on me, luckily though there's a new member of our group just starting his yakking adventure who also let his enthusiasm override common sense!!
This was only Luke's fourth trip out and his first trying for rays/eels. We launched around 1815 in torrential rain, I was ok in my dry suit but Luke quickly got soaked! As soon as we'd anchored we were into fish, nuisance ones at first but then i nabbed the first ray, a small undulate around 8lb. Unfortunately in my attempt to T bar it off the bugger flipped and plopped into the water!
Still, my second ray surpassed my disappointment....
At 16lb 2oz this is my biggest Undulate to date
Luke, watching on, finally hooked into something decent, it came circling up in the water so i guessed it to be a good ray which somehow bit through his snood halfway up......he swore a little bit!
A few dogfish, smoothound, small congers and pout later i hit another nice undy, this one going 12lb
I went all out for a conger after this, donating one of the pout to my hooks and got telltale knocks on both, finally managing to hook into one of them on the 10-20lb class warrior, this was great fun, rod bent double, line being won then taken until the bugger just let go
The cold started to get to Luke plus there was lightning flashes further out so, having three conductors each on our yaks we deemed it pertinent to head in! A very busy night, every drop resulting in a bite or fish annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd..........
Luke got his first ever conger!! He was well made up, gotta love the enthusiasm of these newbies!! Reminds me of me last year!!!
