It is nearly a year ago since TOF, passed away .
we often yarned about his fishing experiences when he was a lad etc, and the one thing he was adamant about was that Whale Chine was haunted.
I know he put a thread or such like on this site about it.
During these conversations he often said to me that 'You would never stay down there alone fishing'
Naturally, I allways told him that it was all a lot of crap/ his imagination etc.
Unfortunatly, I have now recanted the tale to my kids, who have ,somewhat pressured me into taking up 'grandads' challenge .
This I shall do ASAP weather permitting ,and prove it is a lot of crap.
However, just for a bit of background information, I was wondering if any members have had any strange experiences ( that in the light of day can easily be explained when you can control your imagination) along that beach.
Ghost Busters , here I come!!

The only strange thing I have encountered down there is the monster in the sea that takes my bait off and replaces it with a ton of weed

Interisting..
But I believe the weed monster is prevalent around all the island beaches and not just indigious to Whale Chine.
from studies my father carried out since the end of WW2 this creature often inhabits rivers in early spring where it breeds, then spends all summer and autumn in the Solent, before it winters in the waters around the Back of the Wight.
Now back to the ghosts of Whale Chine, did you fish alone??
this was the wager, fishing with other people on the beach doesn't count.
Like the old chap said ' remember old Nixxxxr (the word not used now for people with dark skin, unlike my Father's Day when anyone who was dark skinned was branded with that nickname . Apparently they didn't mind as they were friends. How things change ) Grimes.
He went fishing down Whale Chine alone in 1958, the next day they found him dead!

I knew it was a load of bollocks, soon as the weather drops off I will go down there, hopefully when it's a new moon , ie dark.
by the way I have been reliably informed that people have caught Cod off Brook Beach ,
Regretably the person who told me is a friend of mine for over 50 years and is nearly as bigger bullshitter than me, when we get together.
Possibly there is some truth in it, but unless the weather breaks we will never know

Like many beaches around the Island, Chale is no different from any other; well maybe Dutchmans could be excluded ( that is a bit ghosty, the point that is ) they have all got tales of haunting!
Can't remember how many times I have fished Chale alone, at night, all night sometimes, as I have a lot of other beaches.... with no ghosties....come on now!
I know other anglers have had experiences when down the back and around the Island but perhaps I am lucky because being a bit deaf I couldn't hear them i.e. the shingle walkers.
One thing that is true though is a lot of anglers are frightened in the dark, you can tell them easy because their bloody lights are going all over the place...ere, what was that? look behind, to the side, to the otherside, hope you know what I mean. Mind you if I was a ghost I'd fly over them and get them from above, ( ghost fly, don't they ) that would make them jump.:-) I think the fact remains that as a species we are not suited to being in the dark, so we get frightened and conjure up things. Most of the time I fished weekends with mates etc but on a wednesday I could get home, have tea, get my tackle and be on the beach out back somewhere in about 1 hour or less, and I was on my own, no one else on the beach, very quite, very lonely, ideal opportunity for anything strange to happen, nothing ever did happen, though use to pack up about 1am to get home for a bit of shuteye before the next days work, perhaps I left to early. Who knows perhaps some experience them, others don't, all I know is I have fished Chale most of my life on and off and never experienced anything, you may be different!
