After managing to break the tip of my Shimano Bass rod and to cheer myself up. Bought a Daiwa Ballistic Spinning rod 7 to 28g from Glasgow angling for £67 (rec price £199.50) Now wondering if I can get away with buying the Ballistic Reel to go with it. Around £170 though. linklink

Teamed it up with a Mitchell Mag-Pro Extreme 2000 (£130) and spiderwire ultracast fluoro braid

That looks a nice combo, just googled the reel, looks a bit of a stunner, it's very light too. It's strange where everyone goes on about Zziplex, Century etc, but fail to realize that Daiwa make some exceptional rods, hope you're pleased with the rod, sorry, not keen on your choice of braid. Perhaps when you have given the reel a bit of a bashing you could let us know your thoughts? as I am always interested in getting lighter tackle, getting older so need to keep the weight down! best of luck

I am now 70 and just getting back to shore fishing in the last 5 years. Fishing Loch Pooltiel on Skye is just a 5 minute drive and 100 yards of a walk. I also fish Neist Point - 4 miles of a drive , then a good 20 minute walk down steep tarmac and steps , 45 degree grass bank to the rocks. Only problem during the summer is the lack of parking spaces. Soon fills up with "Bungalows". It's what the locals call some of the tourists - nothing up top. I fish as light as possible - sometimes too light - a single mackerel puts up a better fight on light tackle that 5 on a string of feathers. I had my doubts over the braid as well. The wartime seagull in my avatar has now been replaced by a 6hp 4 stroke Suzuki. I still give my other seagulls a trip out during the summer.

Daiwa also make some dam good reels. I have at least one which is ten years old and still going. Had to replace the line runner bits at one point and much to my surprise, Daiwa sent the spares to me completely free after a quick phone call - magic!

Spare spool now fitted with powerpro braid . Sadly over the other side of the country for the next 5 weeks (only allowed back on Skye at the week end) Hopefully the fish will be around for my return.

Sadly the ballistic is not as good as my Ron Thompson Tyran travel spin which outcasts it on most lure weights. It may just be the extra length on the Tyran. Pollock up to 2 1/2 lb and 1 lb mackerel. May sell the Ballistic as I have just bought a madfish extreme bass / pollock rod 3m 30 - 70g. All of my catches this week have been on Madfish Lures.

20 plus Pollock and coalfish - nothing over 1 lb - on my Madfish rod - outcasting my shimano Aernos 2500 reel. took 20 yards of nylon backing off - and still getting to nylon as the lure drops into deep water. Ordered 150 yds super 8 slick power pro and hope that solves the problem with very little nylon on the reel.

my best this year has been a 5lb pollock and a wrasse on a metal lure. My Madfish rod now teamed with a mitchell Mag-pro extreme 2000 . Tyran with a Shimano Stradic Ci4. Wrasse fishing will now take over from Pollock until spring. May use a shorter rod for that.

Two buys (my Christmas pressy to me) Shimano Stradic Ci4 2500HG and Kastking Sharky 11 2000. Sharky was cheep at £17 postage 1p winning bid. Bought a Savage Gear Seeker ISP . looks an interesting lure but will have to do very well to beat my madfish lures.
