Thats what i liked about them ,the bass look, smallish bites then screaming runs that gradually slow, a good fighter , on the tackle I was on it was touch n go!! have not a clue to which family they are from.

Just looked em up mate they're a type of croaker? saw a rig for em too a " 3" hook pennell. It says they hit a bait them come back and fumble with it before moving off and a slack line improves hook ups, hmmmm rings a bell or two:)

yea the rig is 3 hooks ganged ,you open the hook eye a bit push another hook through it close it with pliers repeat it ,then push a pilchard on to it, but i did not get them this way single hook livebait most of em!! a bit more sporting.... taste really good as well but the shark was the best by miles, snapper a close 3rd.

When I was in mexico my guide turned up at 6.45am one morning with a plastic bag full of mashed baby hammerhead boiled by his lovely( if a little short) wife the night before. (There way of saying thanks for the england shirt I gave him)The whole fish goes in a metal bucket and gets boiled then mashed up. He also brought along some "red water" in another bag for a dip. I kid you not it was the hottest stuff on earth. He showed me , you grab a handful dip it in the sauce and eat it. Try doing that with a hangover. I will never eat shark again. Snapper on the other hand is bloody lovely.

Yea mate I did fish, practically every day for two weeks but only with a light spinning outfit.I went woefully unprepared and had to buy what I could out there which wasnt a lot . I did manage to get a line out most mornings. Had cubera snapper, stacks of catfish ,small cuda ,various brightly colored reef fish ,ladyfish, king mackerel, rays shaped like a figure 8 and hooked 2 big rays (possibly eagle rays) which showed up my gear for what it was. We were renting a nice house nr celestun which is opposite florida on the gulf of Mexico. Stunning mate not a soul for miles ,clear water dolphins jumping my own pier , loved it. We are going to go back in the next year or so it was that good and Ill go prepared next time.
