Just a one more of the bass I caught yesterday and one of its stomach contents! Nothing but hard back crabs ranging between a penny and 2p piece (should have put one as a guide).

So call me thick - but is it worth collecting & using them as bait ?

Not thick at all Rob. On more than occasion last year I had runs from bass that had picked up a crab that was sat munching my worm bait. Reeled back in to find still alive but somewhat 'crumpled' crab impaled on the hook. I shall be giving them a full trial later this year.

I have never caught on hard back, but i have used it a few times and had some great bites on them. One time i used a velvet, cracked the shell and bound it to a 6/0 and cast it out. I had a good bass bite and every time i struck it it kept on hitting the bait time and time again, it really wanted it, but just couldn't hook the beggar!

I wonder if these smaller crabs would be sucked in one big gulp on a smaller hook (1/0 or 2/0)? Maybe with a bigger bait there is more chance of a bass just hitting it from the side?
I feel an experiment coming on! First find a bucketful of 2p sized crabs.....

How about trying some sort of hair rig like the carp boys use, that way the hook is fully exposed.

How about trying some sort of hair rig like the carp boys use, that way the hook is fully exposed. I had never heard of a hair rig (not being a carpie) so looked it up on the interwebby thingy. www.anglers-net.co.uk/carp/hair_rig.htmI guess there could be a way of replacing the orange ball thingy with a crab - any ideas?

The orange ball thingie is a boilie , the hair is threaded through it and held on by a stop. The carp anglers use a small drill bit with a plastic handle to make the holes in hard baits , reckon you could do the same with hardback crabs.

you would have no probs mate and your presentation would be miles better.the crab would also stay more active.look up how to tie a knotless knot and use a 3inch hair. we used 100s of hardback crabs in ireland deadly for the wrasse.

Good post, i read that the wrasse go mental for hardbacks under a float. I also read that hard backs can be a bit of a handful if left to their own devices. They apparently bury themselves or hide under rocks if given to much of a free leash. Like i have said before, i have never caught on them but have had some cracking bites, i disable them and free the scent by lightly cracking the shell.

dont mess aboat with a float fish the crab 4 foot above the weight with a rotton bottom and just hang on.crush a few crabs and put them into your swim and you will draw the wrasse.we was catching them in 12 foot of water a few feet out as thet live aroundv the edges.dont touch the crab keep it whole or it is easier for a wrasse to pinch a bit.hook lightly through the edge of the shell or try the hair rig.i am going to try this at samphire hoe this year as the fish are getting bigger all the time.

just had another idea for your crab presentation.try a boilie band on your 4o hook.these are very small bands with an eye for putting the hook through, works like a hair, put crabs main claw through it will never get away and wont be harmed so will work in the water properly. we have the technology bring on the fissssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssh.
