Just back from Portugal, these were on the slab on the Quay, about 30 inch long and black. The eye is like a black porthole about the size of a 50p bit. Plenty of long teeth! The little Bass were about 7 inch long!!!!

Hello mate.hope you had a good time in portugal. i went to Madeira a few yrs ago.and the fish you are looking at is called the Scabbard fish,it is served in all the local restaurants and is very tasty...........locally it is called the "Espada" www.madeiraisland.com/eng/madeira/articles/espada_fish/08_espada_fish_recipes.phpit doesnt keep well so you wont get it here,but if you ever go back,,,,,try it mate.....youll love it. o and by the way.......you live in ...wot was my second home as a kid.....many a warm evening sat on the veranda at keats Inn keats green Shanklin.over looking the pier and sea. Also caught my first ever sea fish off shanklin pier at night a little pouting,got me hooked on fishing for life at 7 yrs old. Enjoy the Island...........i did holidays to remember....... Gary

saw those fish when i went to madiera. they live at a hell of depth apparently and are queer lookin fellas!

Cheers all, thanks Skatenchips had a good time except no fishing. Watched the locals float fishing off rocks with poles but did not see anything caught. That name makes sense as espada is sword in portugese. Yep Shanklin is great, I sail here, fish here and laze on the beach here also go home sometimes if there is a roast in the offing.
