I'm trying to remove our steering wheel why we rewire the boat but cant shift it, steering wise (rotation) its fine but trying to remove it off the shaft is'nt happening, any advice? We've shot aload of wd40 in it but no good & any more brute force & we're end up rip'ing out the bulkhead with it! Cheers

thay can be real bartenders a puller is the easy way but chok up a few bits of wood behind the wheel to put presure on it, then put the nut back on half way and hit the nut with hammer, the shock and presure normaly pops them off. if real careful a little heat on the wheel can help to other wise back to making a puller

Sounds like a go`er.

Hi Pete, I'd try three things... first leave the WD40 (or try Plus Gas) to really soak into the splines overnight, you could make a sort of reservoir out of plasticine or similar. Give the joint a couple of hard taps and keep trying the next day....
If this failed I'd try some sort of hub puller on the wheel if you have one, but you may damage it (ok if replacing it I suppose)...
Failing these, protect the surrounding area with a heatshield of some sort and introduce heat locally to the shaft from a blowtorch and try and tap/wriggle it off, you will be surprised how that can free up a seized joint......
Good luck...

All the above advice was great but Myself and Pete managed to shift the wheel with some precise tools.........blowtorch, hacksaw and a lump hammer. For those who may have a similar problem in the future a fact sheet will be available, but you can pretty much guess how it goes!!
