Just out of interest what type of ranges are boat owners fishing at? I know of an angler who regularly runs from Langstone to Alderney in a Raider 18. Whats your furthest small boat trip to date?

Mind you, your more comfortable than most in the heated wheel house Karl. You pick your days carefully for that one then?

we used about 5 tanks mate. you need a week of good weather with no wind and accurate gps co-ords otherwise its a long slog for nothing. but when you get it right the results are spectacular 19lb 15oz we had a boat full of cod and pollack that day,i lost between 4 and 5 knots due to the weight of fish

I always use the rule of 1/3rd to travel, 1/3rd to return and 1/3rd in reserve.
As I carry 2 x 5 gallon tanks plus 1 gallon in spare can, I would suggest that my maximum safe limit is 20+ miles.

i take my 535 shetland about 10 miles each way from hamble some times , but the thursty 32 year old outboard i tenderly care for means if i was to go any further id be better off paying for a charter or chip in on somone elses fuel, or on the odd occasion take a boat from work for a "sea trial"
but if i had a better engine i would not think twice about going to the needles or nab and if weather was realy nice for a while posably wrecking

In the summer we chase around and can be 15-20 miles from home and do 50miles in one trip. If we want live sandeels we travel 15 miles to the Varne bank to get em and then head out fishing.. But they are worth it.................................... Luckily when the winter turns up we normally only fish 5miles max. Warrior 175 with Honda 115.. Normally a litre per mile.. Only trouble is it has a 90litre tank but the gauge reads empty after 50!
