hi im running my 85 merc engine for a few mins the odd evening in a barrel of water and after a while the water is getting hot is this normal

yes and no mate. it depends on how big the barrel is and how much water is in it.

its not a big barrel ran it again tonite going to sea tomorrow for a run when you say yes and no can u explain a bit please

an 85 hp engine will heat a small amount of water pretty quickly,because the water is cooling the engine block and leg where the exhaust gasses pass through. also you will have hot exhaust gasses adding their bit to the water temperature. if i run my 60 hp four stroke in a tub i allways leave the hose pipe running adding cold water to the tub. once i left my engine ticking over in a 50 gallon tub after 10 minutes the over heat alarm was buzzing away. luckily no damage was done,so it is muffs for me now.

thanks i have left the hose running to had her out today running perfect we covered about 6 miles today no probs i have just got a muff for mine so it might be the way to got thanks again
