Just thought I would post this, by way of letting of some frustration! En-route back from Culver Spit into Gosport last Friday, engine begins to make funny noises, throttled back and lifted the engine cover, to reveal quite a bit of smoke coming out of the oil breather, decided to plod on, but as I came past Spitbank Fort, engine dies and there is a bang, I broke out the fire extinguisher expecting the worst and carefully removed the cover again, lots more smoke and the breather cap is missing (that was the bang) anyway had a chat with Solent Coastguard to contact SeaStart for me, but they said the MoD Police launch was in the area and would assist (it was dark by this time). I was towed back to my club, and thanked the MoD Police for assisting me. Anyway you could write my knowledge regarding diesel engines on a postage stamp, but there was much sucking of teeth from the experienced club members and suggestions that a new engine might be the way ahead. So am now trying to decide which route to take, but in any event its unlikely that I will be fishing from the boat in the short term.

Hard luck mate, you have experienced every boat anglers worse nightmare. Hope it is repaired soon without too much damage to the back pocket and you're back fishing.

harsh ,sorry to hear that sounds like a piston ring broken to build that much crack presure up, so a new/recon engine would be the cheaper way to go in the long run. what type of engine/model is it??? good luck

Depends on the engine, it may have sleeved pistons in which case the cheaper option may be to recon the one you have.

Hey guys, just to top off my run of bad luck...the clutch shattered on my run around today, took the starter motor out and out popped loads of filings, from what I susped to be the Clutch plate or something similiar, so all I can say is ... bugger!!!!!! Thanks for the comments on the boat engine, it looks like probably the head gasket, at least one of the rings and possibly some of the valves, I think I will get the other engine I have compression tested etc and run up and probably just exchange the existing engine for this one, but it all costs......heard what boat actually stands for from Mick in Daves Tackle (Gosport) its .. Bung Out Another Thousand !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well I hope it will cost me less than that

Thought I would post a quick update. I have decided after much deliberation and thought to get a new engine for Crusader, so am looking around for the best deal, Gosport Boat Yard are offering a deal on the BETA BV1903, but before committing I am trying to see if I can source elsewhere cheaper. Not cheap though, but at least it will come with a warranty and provide peace of mind.

Just a thought, Have you checked out Lancing Marine or Coastalrides web sites? They may have a replacement recon engine at a good price. Could also check out Boat & Outboards for other oulets. May save you some money and still give you a reliable engine without the hassel of getting everything to fit. Good luck on your quest. Dave
