I'm after a decent handheld VHF to serve as a backup for our base unit. Does anyone know of any good deals around at the mo? Cheers Pete

Cheers Pete The ideas good in principle but I've always found handhelds to have very limited range. I suppose they cant make em too powerful for fear of giving you an X Ray when you're using it

Just thought I woudl give you my tuppence worth, the reason that the hand helds don't give the same range is two fold:
1. the radio has significantly less power which is also proportional to the radio horizon, the lower the aerial the less the aerial can transmit and receive radio signals.
2. Radio stations like Solent Coastguard have repeater stations that re-broadcast thier transmissions, coupled with radio masts thats are big, therfore giving a greater radio horizon.
So any handheld will only provide 'line of sight' or perhaps a little further depending upon the atmostpheric conditions, they do what they say on the tin/packet!
Hope this is of some help, i did radio comms for 27 years in my last career!! !!

PS - there were some good deals available at the London boat Show, including deals from mailspeedmarine, i almost bought a chartplotter from them, but found another dealer who was some £30 cheaper!!

There certainly the cheapest around! I just bought the top of the range Standard Horizon for £50 less than some of the sites I looked at. Its a pity there website dont do them justice, I would'nt have been able to find them without your link. Nice one
