For me,any reading material on SeaAngling makes for good entertainment be it magazines or Forums. This months Sea Dangler has an article called "Be safe at sea",it portrays all the required safety articles needed for a boat trip making emphasis on the lifejacket.!!!! Funny.....every time I went out of Dartmouth/Weymouth/Poole Margate I cant recall the skippers going through any safety details, not that we want "in flight" rituals ......... im sittin ere psml.....just thinking of big ol Squid ed Andy givin me a " and here are your emergency doors, ladies and gentlemen". anyway.....I digress !!!!!!! Just made me think that I cant remember seein too many posts on here where members are seen wearing appropriate Helly Hansen 150 Newton bouyancy aids or similar during fishing piccies or is it still not "in vogue" to wear em. The article seems to suggest a Flotation suit is not a lifejacket and that a correct bouyancy aid is the ideal thing to keep us face up afloat should the worst happen. Ive read lots of posts on here re Floatys/VHF rad,s/and other safety related goodies but just wondered how much our boaty lads worry about wearing em (if they have em) or if there just stuffed in a cupboard in the wheelhouse and what about our small Dinghy fishers even more at risk. Made for an interesting read..!!!! Gazza

the only skippper that i know of who give's you the do's and don'ts and safety on his boat is the spirit of arun ,a couple of times i have seen him give these talks when going to my mates boat in littlehampton
when you think of it what he is telling his punters is just common sence but to see it is a different matter you can't help but laugh with him standing on the engine box waving his arms about telling the blokes, when all they want do is go fishing

Skipper I used to go with always just said "If you want a life jacket get one, they are under the seat." and left it at that. One time, some bloke said "I'm alright, got a flotation suit". Skipper then made a rude remark to the effect that he didn't go much on them. If they were any good, the lifeboat crews would use them and they don't. When our lifeboats go out, the blokes all have life jackets on.

I may not normally wear a life jacket but I always sit on it as it saves a bruised ++++ and is handy when you suddenly notice the massive rib full of drunks bearing down on you.

Flotations suits are OK for assisted floating, weather it be face down in the oggin or not. My lifejacket goes on for the trip out and depending on the weather comes off when i anchor up. I should realy keep it on.

dont forget you need 275n bouyancy lifejacket when you fall in wearing a floatation suit to float you face up. lifejackets are uncomfortable when you are hauling in the summer.
just a little tangent here.
last summer i was drifting a wreck when spirit of arun turned up, he saw the fish we had then proceeded to drift around trying to get his crew some of the action.what he had'nt realised was we had gone over the mark by 1/2 a mile and were brewing up. ;D
