channel 10 for us in the eastern solent mate. listen out for other people talking on there and you will learn how to do it,probably the wrong way though but it will give you an idea. its quite difficult to explain on here, your best bet would be to do the course.

I think channels 6, 10, 15, and 17 get used for general chat.

I have just done my course, when you do yours you will find: - 16 General Calling & Voice Distress
- 6, 8, 72, 77 Ship to ship working channels
- 13 Bridge to Bridge, Ship to Ship on matters of navigation matters
- 67 Small craft safety (UK only) Do not use this channel for general communications. In the Solent area HMCG can be called on this channel
- 12, 14, 9 Port control.
- 80 Marinas only
The notes also said that "You should also be aware that channels 6, 10 and 73 together with 67 have been allocated as channels for search and rescue operations between aircraft and vessels. Channel 10 in particular is nominated for oil pollution control." I fish the Esatern Solent so use Channel 10 - guess we will be told to get off it if there is an oil slick. I have used a radio so found the course easy. Depending on experience this site may be useful: www.ukmaritime.org.uk/Radiotraining/Training%20Tips.htm
