Does anyone use baited drop / hoop nets from their boat for prawns and lobsters whilst fishing over rough ground? wondered how successful a method it was.

Good fun when you catch! Some good ones can be bought, but an old push bike wheel with the spokes cut out makes a good frame. As prawns are quite twitchy, i would recommend lining the rim with lead so the rim doesn't `wobble` with the tide and scare them off. Dropping it in some nice dark weed is the best bet and use stinky bait for the best results and pull it in like greased lightening so none escape! An old local fisherman's yarn, is to soak a brick in diesel to fix in the bottom of your net as bait....never tried it but you never know!

i bought a couple of those traps shown in that link. £3 each i got em for! barg! only used them a couple of times left over night for prawns... got a few but not loads. i think i wasnt in the best place! the traps were full of crabs!.. alot of empty praw shells in there too, hmmmm! i spect chucking one over while fishing rough ground will be well worth it!

They are good traps. Dont forget the prawns can get out if they wish, normally when daylight kicks in as they HATE the dark (so put them under a rock or in thick kelp and they will stay in!) Ps, in my last post i was talking about open drop nets that should get checked every 15 mins or so....

i didnt think they'd be able to get out of the ones i bought. they have a long tube type bit of very thin mesh, i would of thought once they're in they're in!
i also didnt put it in an ideal location, alsorts of people roam around weymouth harbour and a bit of string tied to a post going into the water just screams "pull me out!" ;D so i had to hide them!!

They can get out if they can swim, just like lobsters in an ink well pot. But if the pot is in a nice dark area and full of bait, i doubt they would want to leave! Job done!
