Just read the classic "Hooked on bass" by Vaughan and Ladle. Got it from Amazon last week.
The book starts off with the lifecycle / habits of your standard bass and then moves onto the different tactics that can be employed to catch them. It covers pretty much everything including ledgering, plugging, baits, tactics, the lot. Really easy read, with some great catch reports. It's also very local too, with Vaughan fishing on on the Isle Of Wight and Ladle round the Poole area. Some interesting bait ideas I'm gonna have to try...
Good for passing the time during this shabby weather too.
Steve.

I agree, a great read. Couldn't help thinking about how the fishing used to be though compared to what we have now.

Hmm, in general I agree mate, but as far as bass on IOW are concerned, I think we've been relatively lucky. Still plenty of double figure bass to be had, lots of them unreported. Now if your talking about other spieces (cod) then it's a no brainer, there's just none left I'm probably speaking from a position of slight ignorance, as I'm faily new to sea fishing, some of the old hands might be able to say how good the bass fishing used to be.

I think more than a few double figure bass went unreported last year around the Island and unfortunately did not live to swim again.

Great book Steve - got it when it first came out. Have you read its predecessor 'Operation Sea Angler' ? It's out of print now, but available free on-line. Here: www.mikeladle.com/osa.htmlOne of the best reads I think, about the general approach to sea angling. Lots of stuff on bass and other species as well.

Now i know where you got your bass tactics from Richard might just see you down the cliffs soon?. It's true LOL ! ......... well, I try anyway . Not done me a lot of good lately . Used to fish around the areas Vaughan talks about in the book with my dad when I was a lad - Bonchurch, 'Quiet bay' etc. Didn't quite achieve what he has of course, but we pulled one or two decent bass out sometimes . Yeah, I'll be down there (cliffs) as much as I can - give us a shout if you fancy a go. Are you feeling better now ? I know you mentioned being unwell.

Got Hospital appointment with the consultant in a couple of weeks,so all being well will be able to get out on them beaches again soon!! ;D, managed to get on a boat trip few weeks ago,no probs ,its just casting that i couldnt do . Reckon the I-O-W has to be probably the best spot in the country for Bass, if you look at the different types of beaches, you can see why, think i will try and get over there some when, been few yrs since last sortie. Wonder why A.V. left the island??..
