nice pics dont fancy the midchannel conger in fog in a small boat thou . Gordon's bullhuss and spur were caught about two hours later, but on the same wreck. What an amazing difference in the weather. The fog is very eiry, but once you are used to it, it's quite nice to fish in. A very strange silence comes over the water and it's very peaceful. In addition, Quest II is kitted out with some serious electronic trickery (as much as any charter boat) with things like the radar set to track targets and alarm if anything is to close... And I can still use a compass if it all goes belly up.

Hi Gaz
South Coast Tope from the shore?! Hmmm, there are sdome obvious marks such as Hayling and Selsey. They used to throw up some Tope a long time ago (decades), but I am not too sure now. Maybe Chesil?
I thnk the answer would be to stake out one heck of a rubby dubby slick and fish right into it. Given plenty of time, you'd probably pick them up more or less anywhere, expecially the male pack Tope.
The boat is a beauty. She's two and a bit now and I managed to get a bit of a deal on her! I own her with four mates (couldn't afford on my own!) and she's kept in Weymouth. She gets out mid channel a fair bit, not as much as I'd like and fro time to time on the banks and reefs inshore. Couple of times a year we nip over to the islands for a few days too. From time to time I do need crew and anyone on the various forums I buzz through is more than welcome so long as they don't mind splitting costs for the day between whoever is onboard (Total for the boat is about £50 diesel and any bait for a mid channel trip).
Had a bash (and failed miserably) at sharking "proper" last Summer. Only managed two full days. On the first day we attracted mackerel to the slick as far as you could see downtide and as far as you could see down into the crystal clear water.... not a sniff. The second trip we chose to anchor just uptide of a wreck fairly close inshore. Pack Tope one after the other which proved a real pest on the shark gear until "tic tic tic ssssccccccccrrrrreeeeaaaaaaaaaaammmmmmmmmmm".
By eck does it get your adrenalin going when it's been dead all day. Anyway, the long and the short is we failed to connect for more than a second or two with whatever had taken a fancy to our offerings... Determined to try again this year.
Tom
PS: Gaz, I can assure you that I am very Joe Average too. I just talk a lot!
