Hi all, I'm getting my spinning tackle up to scratch. I'm toying with the idea of loading braid instead of mono onto my fixed spool reel. Any opinions / good / bad experiences? Any shabby braid brands worth avoiding?
Thanks,
Steve.

well loads of crap braid about mate. for spinning dont buy sinking braid as it wraps round rocks.ron thomson's braid is really good strengh and fair price.I have brought loads of braid and loads of crap braid.15lb braid would be a good start as this is well thin.

I may have been unlucky but the Power Braid I purchased kept snapping as I tied the knot! Was not happy so dumped the lot! Dave

a good braid is ron thompson as squidey said, as for bad times with it spinning I have had plenty! wind knots, pulled hooks, even with 20ft leader and a soft rod, bass running it over rocks, mono for me everytime for spinning from the beach.

I use mono too, some 10lb `Kingfisher` stuff that squidhead gave me seems to be exelent. Never snapped it ;-)

Braid is great, but for spinning it does feel like a compromise to me. I had a go with it over the last couple of summers & you do need to pay alot of attention to the spool, watching for loops & it wrapping itself around the spool. Also abrasion is a big issue for me, anywhere where it may come into contact with rocks or structure forget it. If a 6lb 3 strand braid gets a nick through just one strand the breaking strand is down to 4lb, two & its down to 2lb - worrying!!! To be honest it took a bit of the enjoyment away from it for me, a light mono is my choice. I'll keep using braid for beating the tide in the boat & even then steer clear of the exceptionally light stuff.

I'm in the braid camp for sure. I was a late starter to lure/plug fishing and learnt with braid. I have used quality mono since and I can't stand it. I want to know exactly what the lure is doing (I mean plugs really) - I want to know if it picks up a tiny piece of weed that will kill the action and ruin all chance of a hook-up - I want to know the split second my expensive rapala touches a rock or a snag so I can stop the retrieve and back the lure out. Never mind fish detection. If you want to impart any level of accuracy in the movement of your lure then braid is the only way to go. I like to make a suspending lure tremble like an injured baitfish for example - you can only do that with braid. I would say that 15lb sounds a little on the heavy side and the thicker the braid the worse it seems to sit on a small fixed spool. I run either 8lb or 10lb braid with about a metre of 12lb flurocarbon as a leader to reduce the chances of nicks and damage to the thin braid. I'm currently using Berkley Fireline - I haven't had any problems with it in the thin strengths although I don't like the look of the thick stuff. I like the look of the new clear(not really) Fireline - just out - I think I'll give it a go when I next need a respool.

Steve Hi Steve I can't recall the strength about 20lb I think. I always use the uni-knot which works well for me. Would have sent it back if I had bought it in the UK but I got it cheap in the USA on a business trip, I expect it was old stock that's why it was cheap! I have seen the advert for Fire-line Cristal but don't understand their size/braking strain from the web site. Can you help? Dave

Hi Dave, Their rating is pretty naff I agree, even on the spool. The confusion is they normally quote a strength in pounds and a strength in kilos but one is the actual strength and one is the equivalent diametre in mono - very weird. I'm assuming that's what your trouble is? What web page are you looking at?

Hi Dave,
It's as Adam says, the first number is the lb Breaking strain and the second is the equivalent diameter mono - the 20lb braid is the equivalent diameter of 8lb mono.
I'm really suprised by the power pro that you got from the states, even if it was old stock it should't be rotten.

Thanks for all the replies chaps. I probably go for some 12lb braid with a metre of so of mono lashed on the end. Just looking forward to spring/summer time now!
