Why does my 1974 ABU 7000C (£12.50 of ebay) outcast my new 7500 (£69.99) by some 30 yards. Also why has it corroded after 5 trips, washed after each use when the old one still looks like new. Are they just crap nowadays?

Hi reid5665, I think that you will find that there are a lot of counterfeit abu reels from the far east on the market at the moment. Doe's it say on the side made in sweden, if not you'v got a duff one.
Tight lines

No mention of Sweden. Have stripped both reels, modern one engineered from plasticine methinks. Old one looks as good as the day it was made although obviously had a lot of use. Did the right thing yesterday then, bought 3 abu 6000c, 1 abu 5000c and another 7000c all dated early 1970s plus big box of spares from my local tackle shops second hand shelf, all for less than £80. Strangely he did not want the new abu in part ex. Told me to use it as a weight next time Im boat fishing. lol

Hi dean, I think you will find that the genuine abu reels are still made in sweden, it's the knock-off's that come from the far east.. i got very angry with my local abu dealer (il leave them nameless 4 now) as thay sold me an abu 7000 c3 last year , and cut a long story short is was shite and was changed twice or more till i got a strop on and got a full refund. that reel was a genuine abu............. made in tiewan after a lot of asking around, it seems abu have moved 80% of there prodution to tiewan and yes thay are very poor to say the least the only why to know if its a good one is look on the side and it will say MADE IN SWEDEN , if it an't there its crap

Tight lines Although there probably are some fakes floating around its not the case that only genuine Abu's come out of Sweden and all others are fake. Abu for some strange reason have put there name to these taiwan cheapies that are made for less & should be sold for less than the original 'Swedish Abu's'. Also watch out for the 'assembled in Sweden' tag, these are Taiwanese built to.

Looks like i did the right thing buying the old ones then and I should never need another reel again. Spent today stripping cleaning and servicing them. They seem to be in really good mechanical condition. Had a cast with each over grass.......faultless. Especially the little 5000c chucks a couple of ounces a long way indeed.

Sounds a good deal reid5665, great reels the older ones & the Swede built new ones, its a pity they're flooding the market with the cheapies - I get the feeling they're making a rod for their own back!

I have 2 mag elites , my green 1 i bought from a bootfair , and is about 4 years old my florida orange i bought last year , and both are stamped made in sweden , great reels , i also have 2 525 supermags , and a 7ht turbo, but i prefer the mag elites to the others , personal choice i think , the penns are great reels , but not as user friendly as the mag elites !!!!!
