Hi all, I'm not going to be able to hold out much longer, I'm going to have to go spinning soon! I've got some unweighted Delta Eels / Redgills I'd like to fish at some point (later in the season). I understand one of the ways to fish them is to use a bubble float. Am I right in thinking the way to do this is to simply put the bubble float above the lure by about 3 or 4 feet or so and 1/2 fill with water? Any particular size of bubble float or distance to the lure I need to be aware of? I assume the retrieve would have to be slow otherwise the eel may just skip along the surface?
Any top-tips?
Thanks,
Steve.

You would be correct sir. Use the `egg` shaped bubble floats as they are streamlined for casting and give off hardly any wake. I practically fill my float until there is only a small bubble of air left. Connect your mainline to the bubble with the smallest clip swivel the float hole will allow and the trace line the same way, this may seem overkill but you will still get tangled now and then! Best to have your lure trace as long as you can, i use 11ft on my 11ft rod, but you can only do this if your lure is very small as it will be resting on the beach before you cast and will suffer a bit of whiplash. Steve, a great allround lure is the small 3" white `whitebait` rubber lures. All i use, for pollack, bass, mackerel ect.........

Ps, its a good idea to get yourself some size 2 hooks with the barbs on the shaft to hold the lure in place better as the supplied hooks are questionable to say the least!

The bay is ok, but to be honest unless you clamber around the rocks in shorts, the best time is from September onwards when the macky are easily taken off the wall and beach, but you are better off down chale and atherfield for that as i`m sure you know! Brook ledge is a demon from the end of may for bass. An old boy `jim` i know does well for the larger ones at norton and yarmouth common wall, though again thats towards autumn time.

One way we used to use a long time ago at The Leys in Aberthaw for the Bass was, Get an old empty Jif Lemon, (you know the ones you have just used on your pancakes ;D ) Make a small hole in the other end, thread some strong mono through and fill/part fill depending on how heavy you want it with moulten candle wax. Fix a swivel to the mono and cast away.
The Lemon is heavy enough to cast most lures and is semi bouyant and bounces over the rocks. Used to work well in Wales.

great Idea that with the lemon bottle, had many a bubble explode on a rock You can catch loads on that gear but they tend to be small,a good tip with those eels is this get a black marker and make the eye bigger! works on all plastic's also in bright weather or the fish are fussy get the black ones they give a great silouette in a bright sky.
