whilst out friday i had a few probs with clips remaining hooked up......ie they did not release. rig 1 single hook pulley rig clipped down to impact shield, under tite tension so bait did not come loose....stuck 3 of 16 casts. rig 2 1 up 1 down clipped up rig using stainless steel wire clip with electrical tubing...again under tension.stuck 4 of 16 casts is this to be expected or is there a tip i can use to avoid it. ie...........buy different clips or try using "springs" in the rig of which i have not attempted yet. ta 4 any help Gaz

me veals ready made dont have this problem at all.but i have noticed on my own made pulley rigs occasionally lets me down.with the 2 hook flappers unless you are casting a huge distance keep them un clipt.parhaps buy a ready made just to see any differences between the two.

Hmm... I find impact leads are the most bullet proof way of releasing a pulley ring. I've not had one fail yet.
I've had impact shield fail on a 2 hook bomber rig. I think this happens mostly when you clip down behind the shield and you have a chunk of bait (eg Rag) next to the line instead of having a bare hook. I think the bait absorbs some of the line tension rather than getting punted out like a bare hook would. Try making sure you have a bare hook next to your impact shield by moving the bait of the hook a little, so the bend is showing.
Steve.

here what ya say steve.....infact it was a whole calamari on a pennel that got caught up a few times....cos the bottom hook is side mounted with laccy string i spose its the bait size that causes it..... i wos more concerned that the "up" clipped rigs didnt release cos the hook u bend is bait free bein upside down.... ill get the hang of it....!!!!!!!!!!!!!! cheers anyway Gaz

don't use the ones built into the lead as sand gets in them and makes them stick

well cheers lads..........thats confused the hell outa me..lolol ill just have to try both types a bit longer and see which performs best over a longer period.....its the up rig clip that im trying to get the best type for....only tryed the stainless steel one. will have to give the breakaway plastic one a go,see if that works any better. thanks for your opinions...!!! Have you put a crimp half inch above the bait shield with a bead? I use srt springs and have no probs. Best bet is impact leads or similiar if you use impact lead i find it works better if you lose the plastic due to them clogging up.

if i use those black impact shield's i get some long nose pliers and by gentle pressure you can extend the hooked section by squeezing the shaft a few times

yes slippery i do use a bead and crimp just above the clip aint experimented with "springs yet"ill have to buy and try one just to see how it works.......i understand it stretches to make up for the mono stretch after repeated casting....or summit like that. Take ya point pete about adjusting the clip...will defo try that too much appreciated fellers. Gaz

Other little tips .... With an Impact shield - if you are using copies (perish the thought !) then make sure the hook part is smooth and no bits of plastic remaining from when it was made, rub them off with sandpaper etc. do the same with 'real ones as well to make it nice and smooth ie nothing to catch on. I have yet to have one not release - pretty foolproof dare I say.
Also try the Breakaway 'IMP' bit more fiddly but a guarenteed release each time.
For 'clip ups - I stopped using wire as it was kinking the snood line & switched to FOX plastic clips - excellent IMHO for both line condition & release. (No - I am not a FOX agent - they just make good gear !)
The other tips are sound - make sure there is only hook metal on the clip - not bait, try SRT springs - they do help on certain rigs and most important one - make sure you dont hook behind the rig body on the Impact shield ...
Good luck ...

if you use a multiplier reel, do you thumb the spool to slow it right down before it hits the water, because doing this will stop your impact shield working properly. same for having your rig clipped too tight.

thanks for your advice Mag (im sure ive seen him at a "fox" trade show)...lolol i will look into their products much more. The thought of using plastics in my rigs appeals to me much more from a weight saving and salt resistant point of view. cheers mate..!!! and NO!!! Pegasus im not in your illustrious company yet mate still a fixed user...... but i think the titeness of hook up may be a reason for failure to release.good point..!!! cheers Gaz

SRT springs will save you no end of grief, if you use them it saves the snood from strtching during the cast for one thing. And if your snoods stretches too much it will not fit the rig properly if the crimps are so tight you cannot move them, then your rig is knackered! Thats why sliders are a whole lot better becuse if you have to change hook lengths you can simply move the sliders so the rig fits properly. next time you make some flappers, use some sliders on either side of your snood swivels and then yo ucan have the hooks wherever you want on the rig. one cast you then have a hook below the lead, then next cast have them both above the lead, then you can judge which is fishing best.

and i don't use multi reels either very often i prefer long 16.5 ft rods with a fixed spool

obviously being new .....rig variations will come in time i follow your set up ideas.....makes good sense. i havent as yet had numbers of fish where by changing my set up it has influenced my catch rate. However i do like to "tinker" with things if it will make a difference to getting "a bite" at all. As in shotting patterns on stick/waggler float fishing its amazing how minor changes can bring you results,so my "chuck it and chance it" thoughts about sea fishing are changing everyday. I just aint used to such a big pond..!!!!!!!! cheers Gaz
