Well yes, for those who don't already know the annual spider crab attack is about to get underway. If you are fishing in the wrong spot they will strip you bait in 1 to 2 minutes on average. They actually come in shore at this time of year to breed but need to eat as well. So what to do: 1. If you manage to drag a sizeable speciman up out of the depths, take it home for the pot. They are well tasty even though a bit more fiddly than regular crabs. 2. Fix up one or two "pop-up" rigs that keep your bait at least a foot off the deck (obviously you can't do this if you are flatty fishing). There are a number of ways of doing this and when I started I used to thread a lump of cork on fairly long snoods about 10 to 12 inches from the hook. These days I have a slightly more sophisticated version involving the use of a small plastic bubble float which sits under water about 3 ft above the deck to which is attached the snood.

Or change venue cause they can take over pushing fish out.............. Aint that the truth. I have a hunch that its not worth flatty fishing when they are invading the sands. I cant see buried flattys putting up with all them sharp legs walking all over them. I find that the more of a rip tide mark you fish, the less likely you are of finding the bait and snood robbers.
