Well - when I started out I used to use a rubber band - wrap it around the tip before you thread your line on - worked well enough for me.
But then I took the "posh" route - took an inch of silicon tube and whiped it onto the top section, then varnished (nail varnish will do) the whipping to weather proof the affair.
The whipped part is about a third of an inch and doesn't seem to affect the way the tip moves, and so far it's been trouble free with no snagging.
