Hi Lewis..I assume you are talking about shore fishing rigs??
I generally vary the snood length dependent on the target species & mark I am fishing i.e. may shorten down a snood for snaggy ground / or fish feeding tight to the bottom or lengthen the snood for clean sandy bottom or fish that like a bit of bait movement.
As a general rule......I use 1up 1down or 2up rigs with a snood length of 12-18"......
For larger fish, (smuts, rays and bass etc) I use Pulley rigs with a 36"+ snood........
For sole..very short (6-8").
Hope this helps Dave ;D

Why do you need very short snoods for sole ? Maybe thats why I cant catch any To minimize the movement of your bait, the stiller the bait the better, and let the fish come to you. Also ALWAYS use grip leads to minimize movement even more.

Generally use 12 to 18 inches like the man said but agree about sole. Mind you, if one is out in a boat, especially wreck fishing I always have at least 3 ft because it can stream out and move around in the current. This is especially important if one is using live bait such as sandeels or joeys also for many lures. I don't believe that it is an exact science though - e.g. snoods on mackerel feathers are only 3 or 4 inches but it works don't it?
