Not that clued up on bass rods. Carp rods are ok as long as there is not 5 kilo of weed to reel in! Use wisely!

I mostly use a 2.5 lb test carp rod or my shakespeare Odessa Flattie rod (probably about the same test) for bass fishing. Both have caught plenty of other things as well. As it's likely that we fish simlar areas - rods of this sort will do you OK in most situations - eg at places like Hillhead, Browndown, or Stokes Bay. Sometimes at Brownwich, Hillhead - where there is only a very mild run of tide, I use an 11 ft spinning rod for ledgering (as well as spinning/plugging) - I've had bass to near 7 lb on that. Most bass are caught at short range. As solehunter says, they would struggle in situations of hard tides and loads of weed, or if you needed to get a big bait out to distance. For reels for bassing - a bait runner type of fixed spool (size 50) is good. If your pockets are fairly deep the Shimano is the one to go for. If you're more of the skint persuasion (like me), then you can't go too far wrong with the Okumas - good value for about 25 - 30 quid. As for mullet - I'm not an experienced mullet angler, although I have caught them on the above gear - more by accident than design ! Others on here will tell you more about that I'm sure. A light carp rod would a good compromise, but if you were to get more serious about mullet fishing, then a freshwater match rod and reel might be the way to go.

I bought an Abu Suveran 2.75lb test carp rod & its brilliant! it has enough gut's to haul in a clump of weed & I've even used it with a 5oz gripper when I've had to.
The good thing about buying a carp rod which will be great for bass is that there's zillions on ebay so you can always pick up a bargain! You may well get away with the carp rod for the mullet aswell as the bass but from what I've read the softest of tips are the most forgiving when specifically targetting mullet. Good luck, let us know how you get on.
