Bored in me cripples cage yesterday,so took the new Conoflex Estuary match for a spin down the Thames for sum much needed casting practice with the 7HT and ... new toy...Penn 525 Supermag Its 130 yards wide at Runneymede ,so knowing I wouldnt reach the other side ,,by some margin.. Set the penn up first...as a newy to multi,s,have to say this mutha does fly but after fiddling with the mag dial I got it down to a 5 b4 it started to back up with coils of loose line on the spool. Feathering is fine provided you see the lead land and act quickly enough...that said I am well happy to report that I managed 120 yds with a "friendly lob" a PB for me. Equally the 7HT ,of which I got to a 4 on the dial managed the same distance..... So...with 15lb line /60lb shock and some carefull casting with 4oz leads they both did the same distance. I dont really know what to say about that fact..other than there both bloody good reels with differnt braking systems but to a newy like me have increased my casting by 30yds. yer yer.........so all the fish are at 60yds..some say... but its just nice to have an option.........and look out . when I can do a proper cast............lol Gazza Ps im now looking for a wider bit of river....

I never used to use my Multi's at night for the same reason but as I got more confident with my technique, it is surprisingly easy - you just know when the lead is going to hit - trust me ! Difficult to explain but its like a 6th fishing sense .... Trouble is when your casting gets better you will brake sooner than you need to so be firm but gentle when braking ... The other thing that becomes obvious is as the lead lands the spool starts to 'feather up and is clearly noticeable - then brake hard .... You will nearly always get a small over-run but easily walked off when you return to the rod rest. When you start - set the magnets on the slowest setting and it may also pay you to set the spool free play a little tighter than normal, you will loose a little distance but better that than hours unpicking/cutting a birdie ! Good luck mate ...... go for it

Well I guess kicking off fishing at 7 yrs old with FS reels and some fantastic ones along the way up untill 47 I have to dispute that a multi is anything other than a different bit of kit designed to deliver a bait......at least with a FS I can "fling and forget"....now I gotta change the oil/check the brakes/check the mags/tune the dial/check the float/dont over fill the spool/ watch the lead in flight/feather the landing/.wear a rubber johny on me thumb......and then sit there for hours undoing some god almighty tangle all in the name of having a good time.............lololol You were saying....................!!!!!!!!!! Must say though..........there bloody good fun to cast.... ;D ask me again next yr....I mighta mastered the sucka by then. Gazza

Sounds like you're doing great Gazz - keep it up ! Absolutely nothing wrong with fixed spools of course, but once you've got the measure of multipliers, you might find they are much more compact, 'direct' and generally pleasurable to use for most of your beachcasting. And don't worry - we all suffer a few birdies now and again !

Hi, been considering a multi for some time now, out of the two multis do you have a preference?

Im probably the last one on here that can give you a concise answer Walker as ive yet to use one in anger,so as yet dont know how they perform under catching conditions. But,having been a FS user for 40 yrs its come as a shock that both these reels have got me buzzin to cast em albeit in different weather conditions down me local river. I have both spooled with the same 14lb Stren line with a 60lb shock and 4oz lead. The 7HT is 8yrs old but in good nick and engineeringly sound. The 525 supermag is 15months old and virtually new. So far they have both cast 120yds measured on the same rod with a friendly lob in good conditions and both cast about 80/90yds in a strong head wind.
so far ive enjoyed practising with both mate. but the only edge Im given to understand about the 525 is that it is a modern reel capable of rock use as well.
But beware......multi use can be catching....lol
