It's more likely the line lay on the spool causing the noise (by putting it out of balance) as opposed to the bearings.

It's only the first 10 or 20 yards from the inside of the spool that affects the balance, which is why as long as you're fairly neat when reeling in it won't matter. Once you get it right I advise you to never remove the last bit of line on the spool. There's no right or wrong way to do it, it's just trial and error. This is from a website on how to do it- neilmackellow.sea-angler.org/reel_tuning.html

Don't bother trying to listen. Just set the reel in free spool and spin the spool as hard as you can. As it slows down to a stop if it rocks backwards and forwards it still needs balancing if it stops smoothly it's ok.
The annoying thing is that you need the spool to be full to have enough weight to do this so you have to keeping filling it up and stripping it everytime you check.

For my casting reels I tape the line down and use one of the polishing pads on my dremel to run the spool up as fast as possible. MOST of my casting reels will balance up by just laying the first 50 yards or so right accross the spool really roughly and then evening out the line lay for the rest of the spool if that doesn;t work then I use the method above. If that doesn't work then the spool goes back to the manufacturer of in the bin but 99% of them will balance. ONce you get it balanced, never take that last bit of line off the spool of you'll have to go through it all again This might help myfishcasting.org/TCN/?page_id=10
